Genioplasty – Chin surgery

line2

Chin implants can give balance to the features of the forehead, improve the appearance of the profile and give volume to a small chin. This way the patient can get a more intense chin and a longer face.

Some patients prefer the filler application, which also gives volume to their chin, but in this case the results would only last for a few months and would require frequent visits. In contrast, implants offer permanent results.

Sometimes it is necessary for genioplasty to be performed simultaneously with rhinoplasty. In this way we achieve a satisfactory balance on the face as the size and shape of the chin may be affected by the change in the shape and size of the nose. It can also be combined with cheek implants or lip augmentation, to achieve further aesthetic improvement of the face. Although some patients did not initially intend to correct their chin, they proceeded to genioplasty after the doctor’s recommendation and were truly satisfied with the results.

The chin implant is ideal for patients with a very weak / small chin and / or protruding nose, as the operation helps to balance the aesthetics between these two features. Candidate patients for this operation should be healthy and without major health problems. Surgery is not indicated for people who have taken Accutane in the last six months or are taking medication for heart disease. It is important that patients have realistic expectations so that they’re pleased with the outcome of the operation. Genioplasty usually has great success, as well as a positive effect on the appearance and self-confidence. However, it should be based on personal desire and not on influence or possible pressure from others.
Genioplasty surgery usually lasts up to an hour and is performed under local anaesthesia or sedation, unless the patient prefers general anaesthesia. During the operation, an incision is made inside the mouth so that no visible scar remains. The implant is placed on the front of the chin bone and is fixed with sutures. The patient returns home the same day. For some patients, an internal incision may not be possible. In this case, an external incision is made under the chin so that it’s not easily visible.
Swelling and a tingling sensation in the operated area usually occur after the operation. Pain is treated with painkillers and usually subsides within a few days. Your doctor may suggest that you apply compresses to help reduce the swelling. Initially, the patient follows a light diet until the gums recover from the incision. In the case of the external incision, the sutures are removed after 4-7 days.
Although genioplasty is considered a safe procedure, in some cases side effects such as:
  • Prolonged swelling and bruising
  • Reaction to anaesthesia
  • Infection
  • Displacement of the implant
  • Numbness
