Suitable for breast reduction surgery are women with oversize breasts that cause medical problems, low self-esteem and/or social or physical discomfort. The operation cannot be performed during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Understanding the risks and maintaining realistic expectations is essential in order for the patient to be happy with the results.
Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and lasts about two hours. The duration of the operation depends on the specific techniques and needs of each patient. There are several types of incisions that can be used. The doctor decides accordingly, after reviewing each individual case.
This technique involves an anchor-shaped incision and is suitable for women with oversized breasts. The surgeon removes skin, fat and glandular tissue from the bottom of the breast, and he may also need to reposition the nipples and areola. With this technique the scars are slightly more visible.
With this technique, the incisions are made around the nipple and continue vertically down to the breast crease. It is suitable for women with moderately large breasts, which don’t require extensive tissue removal. This technique offers a nice shape with less visible scars.
In this case liposuction techniques are used to reduce the size of the breasts with minimal or no scarring. Since liposuction only removes fatty tissue, this technique is suitable for patients who have more fatty tissue and less glandular tissue. It’s commonly used in men with enlarged breasts.
After breast reduction surgery, there is soreness, swelling, and bruising in the area for several days. Physical activity should be limited for one to two weeks, while exercise and other strenuous activities should be avoided for at least four weeks. The sutures are absorbed on their own and you will need to see the doctor for regular follow up appointments to ensure a proper healing process. After the breast reduction surgery the results are immediately visible and continue to improve as the swelling and bruising subside. The scars will continue to fade over time and can be covered with your bra, swimsuit or clothes.
Although breast reduction surgery is considered safe for most patients, there are some risks that are associated with the procedure. Some of these are loss of sensation, permanent scarring, asymmetry as well as complications associated with any surgical operation, such as infection, bleeding and reaction to anaesthesia. However, most breast reduction patients do have no serious complications.
