Gynecomastia – Male Breast Eduction

Gynecomastia is the overdevelopment of male breasts and it affects 40-60% of men. It can be the result of hormonal imbalance, obesity or of certain medication.

Candidates for this operation are men who have large or sagging breasts, a fact that makes them feel emotionally uncomfortable. The operation can be performed to men whose breast development is complete, are in good emotional and physical health, do not smoke and are not obese. Ideally, they should have elastic skin, as this will help reshape the breast after surgery.

Male breast reduction procedure

The operation is usually performed under general anaesthesia in a clinic or hospital and usually lasts 1 to 3 hours. It may be performed using liposuction or surgery or a combination of the two. If the excess volume is mainly caused by excess glandular tissue then surgery must be performed. In this case, small incisions are made to remove the excess tissue and skin and also to reposition the nipples if needed. These incisions are closed with sutures, which are covered with bandages after surgery.

Recovery from male breast reduction

After surgery to correct the gynecomastia, there is usually bruising, swelling and discomfort, which subsides within a couple of weeks (but usually resolved quickly) and can be treated with medication. The patient will need to wear a compression shirt or vest that holds the breasts and helps to recover faster from swelling and bruising, which will subside after 1 to 2 weeks, when the sutures are removed. Patients can return to work after a week. Light aerobic exercise is allowed after a week, but any strenuous activity should be avoided for at least 4 to 6 weeks.

Risk of surgery

In addition to the possible complications associated with any surgery and anaesthesia in general, the following have been observed:

Skin injury
Loss of nipple sensation
Skin discoloration
Scarring
Asymmetrical breasts or nipples

The results of surgery to treat gynecomastia are usually permanent, as long as the patient's weight remains stable. If the cause of the condition was a specific medication, then it should be stopped in order to maintain results.
