Scar Restoration

line2

A scar restoration procedure is needed when we want to reduce scarring caused by an injury or a previous surgery. While many signs weaken over time and are eventually transformed to less noticeable, many patients find the healing period really difficult as the scars may become red, upstreched, engraved or deformed.

Many people feel unhappy and annoyed by the appearance of these scars, especially when they are in prominent places and seek treatment to improve them. Dr. Sotirios Ioannidis provides a dedicated appropriate solution for each patient to restore the scars. His purpose is to find the best way to help patients achieve a smooth and clean skin and not being ashamed.

There are several types of scars that can be maintained, depending on the type and severity of the injury, the patient's age, the general health and each one’s healing abilities. Hypertrophic scars are red and raised, filled with excessive amounts of collagen, which can cause itching. Although they are considered as harmless and do not develop beyond the limits of the original wound, they are often annoying and, in some cases, painful. Keloids are oversized areas of scar tissue that appear irregular, raised, pink or red and may continue to grow over time. While they can appear anywhere on the body, they are most common on the face, neck, ears, chest or shoulders. Contractures are more severe scars that restrict movement in the area where the tissue is pulling during the healing process. This type of scar usually occurs after large tissue losses or in wounds that occur in the joints.
The scars are permanent. Some treatments can reduce, weaken or reduce by other means the appearance of a severe or unattractive scar. Such a scar restoration treatment is especially useful in areas of cosmetic importance such as the face and the hands. There are many surgical methods for examining scars. Only a few of them may be suitable for each specific type of scar or its location. Among them is the surgical resection, skin implants, flap surgery, Z-plasty and more. The appropriate procedure for each patient differs. It depends on the location and severity of the scar as well as the age, the general health and the regeneration level each patient desires to achieve. Dr. Sotirios Ioannidis will develop a personalized treatment exclusively for you after a thorough evaluation of your scar, during your first consultation meeting.
Surgical scar excision is usually applied for severe scarring and involves the surgical excision to remove the scar and damaged tissue with a scalpel. A skin flap or a skin graft is used to restore the appearance of the skin in the treated area. It also improves the movement and flexibility that may have been affected by the contraction.
Some scars can respond to a variety of topical treatments, including laser treatment, injectable medications, and dermabrasion. Multiple treatments are usually required, with the result leaving the patient somewhat unhappy. Dr. Ioannidis will evaluate the personal desires of each patient and he will suggest the appropriate treatments.
The effectiveness of scar restoration depends on several factors, such as the reason of the damage, the healing ability of your body, the size and depth of the wound, and the thickness and color of your skin. Most scar repairs will heal within 1-2 weeks. Dr Sotirios Ioannidis will ask for a follow-up visit within a month, to advice on optimizing the scar care.
